Apple’s Photo Stream is not the ultimate answer

First a warning. Apple gives the impression that it is super easy to back up all your photos to make. In fact, it happens automatically via Photo Stream. Convenient! But who is fanatical photos on vacation will find that Photo Stream is not a total solution. Here’s why:

  • Photo Stream upload photos only if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. Get a large part of your holiday not connect to a wireless network, then there is no backup of your photos and videos are made.
  • Photo Stream stores only the photos from the last 30 days in iCloud. So you have thirty days to back up your photos using a Windows PC, Mac, external hard drive or external cloud storage service. Do not do that, then they are only 30 days after your (vulnerable) iOS device and not available in iCloud.
  • Photo Stream stores only the last 1000 photos on iOS devices linked. Do you want to store pictures longer, you will have to move to another album. From the Photo Stream folder But a collection of photos on your iOS device is obviously not a good backup, because once your device is broken you lose.
  • pictures

Are you planning to name just a few pictures to make and you’re regularly on a Wi-Fi network, then Photo Stream obviously a good solution. The storage Photo Stream does not come at the expense of 5GB iCloud storage that everyone gets free disposal. So you turn it on:

  1. Go to Settings> iCloud> Photo Stream.
  2. The Photo Stream option you turn the switch on.

Upon returning from vacation, you must remember that you make a backup of the photos, for example, to a local hard drive or Dropbox.

Caution: do you use a mobile hotspot (Keepgo, Droam, etc.) with a limited data plan, please note that your iPhone or iPad or is connected via Wi-Fi and Photo Stream than simply running if you have enabled. This also applies for iCloud backups.

Backup via shared photostream

Photo Stream has the limitation that pictures but remain limited time available. After 30 days, they disappear from the iCloud backup. There is a solution to store more pictures namely by enabling a shared photo stream. Actually a shared photostream intended to watch, friends and family while you’re on vacation. Friends can subscribe to your photostream and immediately see the photos that you have made.

shared photostream is not the limit of 30 days. The photos are stored indefinitely until you delete them manually or delete the photo stream. However there is a limit of 1000 photos. When you reach that limit you delete photos to add new ones. You switch Shared photostream in Settings> iCloud> Photo Stream> Shared photostream.

warning: shared photo streams can lead to high roaming charges when you are abroad. While ordinary photostream only upload via Wi-Fi networks, makes the shared photo stream also use 3G networks when available. So beware: if you enable roaming on your iPhone “just to pick up some e-mails” may happen that there unnoticed also a fair amount of photos being uploaded
