The problems of a bigger iPhone and iPad - ZDNet.nl

Summary: You’d think it’s easy to make the screen of a device that is bigger but it’s not. Especially when that device bears an Apple logo.

rumor that Apple is experimenting with larger screens for the iPhone and iPad. Believe it or not, but there is more to it than just making the devices bigger.

The current 4-inch size of the iPhone would be jacked up to 4.3 inches. The screen of the iPad would be less than 13 inches, compared to the current 9.7 inches.

You would think that it is easy to make the screen of a device slightly larger – make a larger screen and plug all electronics in it – but it’s not. Certainly not when the company behind the device is obsessed with delivering the best possible user experience.

Here are some bedenkingn:

Ergonomics

Are the larger screens easy to use? Apple has done very busy at the 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 means that the phone still with one hand to operate. Apple has found a way to make operable?

in the same way a 4.3 inch screen

I did some devices of different sizes in my hands and my experience is that even the addition of 0.1 inch can make between user or uncomfortable using a phone.

a differenceWhat

a 13 inch iPad is concerned, that is a giant screen. If you ever fixed’ve had a screen that size then you know that it brings some challenges in design with it. Weight and thickness are of utmost importance.

Perhaps this is the reason that Apple is interested in Liquidmetal?

Battery Life

The addition of 0.3 inches on the iPhone may not be much, but the addition of 3.3 inches to the iPad represents a huge increase in energy consumption. That undoubtedly means that the battery needs to be bigger and that in turn means a heavier tablet. More weight can mean a more awkward experience.

Supply Chain

Can suppliers produce enough large screens in order to meet the demand? There are already rumors that the launch of the new iPhone is delayed because of a shortage of screens. The production of screens is defined in space, not on the number of panels, and the addition of a few additional inches can mean more pressure to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Apple sells each quarter millions of iPhones and iPads and everything does slow down the supply chain, the company hundreds of millions in turnover costs.

Price

Apple has managed to keep. the price of the iPhone and iPad constant New iDevices cost as much as the old iDevices they replace. Who wants to upgrade, eliminating the need for a price shock to expect.

Bigger can also mean expensive. Apple will have to try to keep still.

Fragmentation

Apple is working hard to prevent different screen sizes ensure fragmentation of the platform. Apps scales neatly between the iPhone and the iPad, the iPad and the iPad Mini, and retina and non-retina screens.

Although there is undoubtedly a fascination for increasing screen sizes when it comes to Android and Windows, Apple competes in essence only to himself and the pressure to add more inches – whether they are useful or not – is therefore nonexistent.

This means that Apple does not need to take risks. It can make the products that consumers want to buy, rather than undesirable design tweaks to force the users.
