Review: Asus Transformer Book T100 (T100TA) - Tablets Magazine

Asus Transformer Book T100 is a hybrid tablet with Windows 8.1 software and a very attractive price. Asus you can expect a lot when it comes to tablets with keyboard because in the meantime they have a few years of experience, and anyway, their background in small and affordable laptops quite big with their past as netbookfabrikant. After a few years spent mostly Android hybrids on the market to have, it is now time for a Windows 8 machine, and with a price of around 350 euros, the Transformer Book T100 also very affordable.

Asus Transformer Book T100 – Specifications

The table below contains a summary of the main specifications of the Asus Transformer Book T100 (T100TA). As you can see it is a very complete system, but also not be described as a real powerhouse.

Bluetooth Yes, 4.0

Battery 31.5 Wh

All this is packed into a tablet with dimensions of 263 x 171 x 10.5 mm. In addition, there is of course also the keyboard dock that things approximately doubled in weight and thickness. In addition to a keyboard and mouse surface you get with it a USB 3.0 port, but not on battery.

Asus Transformer Book T100 – Hardware and design

The Asus Transformer Book T100 is a very typical 10.1-inch tablet. To keep costs low Asus has chosen to use a plastic case for both the tablet and the keyboard. Especially the shiny plastic of the tablet looks somewhat cheap, but fortunately the tablet well and feels solid. Of course the front has room for ips panel bordered by pretty hefty black borders (bezels) and protected by a glass plate.

is striking that this Asus Transformer Book T100 to find a Windows 8 “Start” button is on the front (like a logo, that 99 percent of the cases is a button) but the button on the side of the tablet has been processed. The tablet is 10.5 mm not super thin and 550g is not special, but as I said eventually results in a well-sensing package. The different gaps that are there to connect the tablet / dock with the keyboard in this case are also well finished, and unlike other hybrids Asus does not provide just a little too sharp edges.

Display

screen Asus Transformer Book T100 is an IPS LCD panel with a size of 10.1 inches and has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels. Pretty standard for a Windows 8 tablet in this price range. Where we normally are less forgiving when it comes to ‘low’ resolution screens, the impact on Windows 8 devices more limited. The modern environment with clean lines (tiles) asks not necessarily have high resolutions and the desktop environment is high resolution often downright problematic because Windows’ limited ability to scale. Well content Of course we miss the pixels do when it comes to rendering text and images that just look less sharp and show less detail.

terms of color, contrast and viewing angles, the screen is a neat middle position. The colors are of course while the blacks what to be desired, and the viewing angles are called. Fine for normal use It is also not rare that we encounter a ipspaneel that really below average performance and therefore disappoints. The screen of the Asus Transformer Book T100 is in that respect a great expectations resurgent screen, especially if we keep the price point of 350 Euros in mind.

Connectivity

Like many of Asus’ products, the Asus Transformer Book T100 also a nice and complete range of connections, both wired and wireless. On the tablet itself you will find the vast majority of connections, microUSB, microSD and microHDMI are the smallest connections. This is in addition a small microphone and a place to connect your headphones. To In terms of buttons, there is an on / off button, volume control and the prominent Windows aforementioned 8-button.

Wireless connectivity options come in the form of a modern dual-band Wi-Fi chip that supports 802.11 a / b / g / n (no AC) and Bluetooth 4.0. Unfortunately mobile internet (3G and 4G) and GPS do miss the Asus Transformer Book T100. This tablet also does not have NFC, but we find a lot easier to forgive.

Audio Quality

The stereo speakers are included at the back of the Asus Transformer Book T100 doing remarkably well their job. That’s unusual because speakers on tablets are usually not really very impressive, though Asus already know this trick to catch up with their MeMO Pad FHD. Of course, the tablet speakertjes continue and so you should not expect too much, but in general you can say that the speakers on this tablet can be quite high in volume and put the show remain good view (little to no distortion). For the real serious applications, there is always a koptelefoonaanlsuiting or Bluetooth connection available.

Camera

To reduce costs Asus has opted for a single camera on the Transformer Book T100, one on the front. The 1.2 mega pixel counting camera is not a high-flyer and certainly in less than perfect light environments are the snapshots gray and hazy, but generally it is 720p camera fine in useful for conducting a Skype call or something similar.

Battery Life

The battery life of the Asus Transformer Book T100 to me is no different than impressive to describe. It just does not or rare that I have a Windows 8 machine used 10 hours of on a single charge. Windows 8 devices to the full version of Windows, and not the RT version, in that respect even rarer. Asus has chosen to handle a battery in the keyboard dock so I do understand, especially since it is undoubtedly a measure has been that the price point of 350 Euros has made possible. Again In short, the average user can certainly be a day ahead with this hybrid.

Keyboard Dock

The keyboard dock is the element Asus netbook manufacturer’s past rears its head again, and precisely because it regards me harder to swallow that taught “little” of the past. Of course it makes sense that the dimensions of the keyboard are limited by the 10.1-inch screen that is in the Asus Transformer Book T100, but the urge to six rows of keys to be processed in the limited space I find incomprehensible. It is thus a full keyboard, including function keys, but also have the really important buttons gotten a smaller size to accommodate the sixth row space. I just prefer to see slightly larger keys. Yet after a while to get used quite possible to tap on the keyboard, with reasonable speed but as real text editor I do not see. These hybrid I do not understand moreover why a manufacturer like Asus does not choose to use a machine, a 10.6-inch screen like this one, which offers besides some extra screen space also more room for a “real” keyboard (a choice that Microsoft myself making the Surface tablets).

trackpad (mouse surface) is ok but not particularly good. The multi-touch gestures such as scrolling and Windows specific tricks work fine but the limited size of this mouse just trigger you just this specific swipes (for example, switching between apps) a little too often. Fortunately, the touchscreen is always close by to offer better and finer control.

Asus Transformer Book T100 has been a clever battery life and so I understand the choice of Asus to not to handle extra batteries into the keyboard. Astute readers may be reassured in terms of battery life, but are deeply concerned about the weight ratio. Yet, Asus has also given it (and learned from the past) and this system is well balanced. The dock is heavy enough, despite the absence of such batteries. However, a full sized USB 3.0 to find which of course is very useful when it comes to connecting an accessory in the dock.

Asus Transformer Book T100 – Software

The Asus Transformer Book T100 (T100TA) runs on Windows 8.1 and Asus actually has almost nothing added to the standard installation of this software. Since we are talking about a hybrid tablet is good to speak out loud that this machine on the full version of Windows running, and so you have the ability to install in both the modern environment (via Windows software sorts itself out store) as well as in the desktop environment.

Especially in tablet form, you’ll spend most of your time in the modern environment, with the tiles. Most applications that you can set for this type invent standard at all possible, but it is always to be filled with apps that you can install from the Windows Store. It is becoming more available, but the growth is not as explosive as we saw with iOS and Android. The range of programs for the desktop environment is obviously huge and so offers a immeasurable number of options on the Asus Transformer Book T100. Of course you should bear in mind that the Intel Atom processor power is not optimal when it comes to software like Photoshop and similar krachtvreters. In terms of resolution, it is good to know that the 1366 x 768 pixel limit yourself to two rotating parallel apps in the modern environment (snap views). Of course, you can use this latest version of the Microsoft operating system is to decide how wide each of the windows is.

A great advantage and cost savings comes in the form of Office Home & Student Edition. Microsoft Office package, and remains one of the most popular options in both industry and education and is just very convenient that you have immediate access to the power and possibilities of this package.

The only thing that Asus has added in software on the Asus Transformer Book T100 is the Asus web storage app / integration. When you purchase the tablet you get a free one year unlimited space, then you’ll have to patch to use the Asus web storage. Initially you get there so quite some pop-ups and registration questions, but they are pretty easy to ignore and clicking away if you prefer a service like Dropbox.

Asus Transformer Book T100 – In use

tablet is the Asus Transformer Book T100 really good useful and versatile tablet, especially since you have the option for the desktop to use software. At those moments notice additional proof of the added value of a keyboard and trackpad. It remains simply the best way to manipulate. The old desktop interface However, the keyboard keeps the character of a netbook and as I said, I find it difficult to see it for users who really want to do. Huge word as recommended But half an hour to process mail and make adjustments in Office documents satisfy the fine. A dissertation writing does not seem like a perfect plan (notes during lecture again though). This review is also written on the Asus Transformer Book T100, but not without some frustration over something small keys.

The connection between tablet and keyboard is fine, although a little bit of wiggle room falls compared with other (Asus) hybrids really well. Also, it must be said again that Asus has paid close attention to the balance between the two parts, the heavy tablet is sturdy enough to the dock to not just fall back and be on your lap.

comfortable use

Performance

the Bay Trail Intel Atom processor and 2GB of memory combination to me is – certainly for this form factor – a perfect balance between performance and battery life beaten, without cutting into the possibilities (RT I look at you!). No one who is serious about Photoshop or describes himself as a gamer this machine will need to consider seriously. For standard applications that you want to perform on a budget laptop, there’s more than enough power available, and even flash runs very nice on this Asus Transformer Book T100. For the vast majority of things you want to do on a tablet, the Asus Transformer Book T100 also more than capable of, what the package is so complete. We must not forget that this tablet an hour or 10 lasts on a single charge, and a half years ago this was unheard of for a Windows machine.

Asus Transformer Book T100 – Conclusion

Asus has Asus Transformer Book T100 is a very interesting netbook / tablet hybrid on the market. It is not the performance, the materials or used parts very positive stand. It is true that it is all so very modest, looking at the 350 euros that cost this machine. The price tag is certainly the most striking aspect of this hybrid tablet. The costs saved on the casing, the screen and camera are thus very easy to forgive. Office that comes with this tablet (normally around 100 euros) should convince even the doubters of the hugely attractive price-quality Asus where it comes in the form of the Asus Transformer Book T100 (T100TA).
