Lenovo Miix 2 (8-inch) review: a new standard - Tablet Guide

The second generation 8 inch Windows 8 tablets at the door, so time for a review! This Lenovo Miix 2 is the first in this series that the extensive testing of the editors of TabletGuide.nl has undergone. In this tablet review read what we thought of the Lenovo Miix 2 8 while using this tablet almost daily for a period of over a week. Thus, we publish our experiences over the screen, the housing and the design, performance, sound quality, software, battery, and of course the price.

This tablet review has been carried out with the Lenovo Miix 8Â 2 with Wi-Fi (no 3G) and 64 GB of storage.

Design & Housing

The design of the Lenovo Miix 2 8 is not as exciting. Lenovo has the bezel, the edge next to the screen, namely narrow holding. Right in front of the screen while sitting you see all the aluminum rim that is for additional protection. This is only to find, in addition to the back side at the bottom. On the side of the tablet If you drop the tablet, make sure that happens on the bottom ;-).

We also see a hard plastic back which is very likely weight and cost reduction. Unfortunately, the back pasted as a billboard. Three stickers, next to the logo, it is too much for.

Fortunately, we have a thin tablet making. Slightly more than 8 millimeters thin, this Lenovo tablet, what untold thin for a Windows 8 tablet, especially considering the small screen size of 8 inches. The weight, which came to us at just over 350 grams, it is also very neat to mention.

Windows button on the front is based on touch, which I find unfortunate in this case. It is very nice but in the dark, you can find the button hard. Also, you should be relatively hard on the Windows button before Miix 2 8 tablet react.

Screen

1280 by 800 resolution 8-inch display gives you an acceptable pixel density (189 pixels per inch) for a Windows 8 tablet. Windows tablets have generally not a name as a high resolution tablets, which is not a disaster, especially given the price tag that hangs on the Lenovo Miix 2 (8 inches). The images are sharp. Characters, for example the IE11 browser sharp eyes. Only sometimes we notice the lack of full high-definition images when viewing videos. Again, for an average user, this is all acceptable

The colors are also very realistic. Especially bright colors stand out, but the white and grays are highly satisfactory.

The viewing angles of this Lenovo Miix 2 8 are impressive with the exception that a yellow glow can be seen on dark surfaces.

from some oblique viewing angles

The brightness is fine. I did notice that I display in a higher position switched quickly to see the screen. Well This is, unfortunately, at the expense of the battery.

Noise

The sound qualities of Lenovo Miix 2 8 are a concern. Our experiences with the testing of this Lenovo tablet showed that especially the volume level is not so good. At its loudest volume is only an average volume. This is also because the speaker (only one of them) on the back of the tablet is placed. Because of this you should have indirect audio. The quality of the sound is too soft not to mention.

above average

Performance

The Intel Atom Z3740 chipset

we arrived at in the review of the ASUS Transformer Book  T100. In which tablet review we talked about an optimal balance of these Atom SoC between performance and efficiency on the other «variance in the form of thickness of the tablet and battery life.

in this review of the Lenovo Miix 2 8 we can draw the same conclusion. First is that the tablet is really fast. Booting Windows 8 is like a charm and both interfaces (Modern UI (touch) and desktop) run smoothly in this Lenovo Miix 2 tablet. Apps start really fast and heavier applications exhibit no delays or other defects in this 8 inch Windows 8 tablet.

This practical experience is reflected in the results of the tests, which are added below. It is again the fastest Atom chipset of the moment, along with that of the ASUS T100, which the force can be used with third-generation Core i5 chipset from Intel. Almost compared Or that its impact on the battery life, we read in the next item.

However, the Lenovo Miix 2 8 sometimes warm (not hot) on the back.

Battery

The excellent performance of the Intel processor does not directly commit the expected drain on the battery life. The Lenovo Miix 2 8 operates for easy one hour or 7 to 8 with it. You are very careful with the device, with the correct settings (low brightness, no WiFi), you can up to 10 hours rekken. Determining the battery life is of course a relative matter. Very heavy duty demands of course its toll and will be the average battery use or poach some hours.

Unfortunately we notice however that still some power seems to leak out. standby or hibernation Every evening fades to about 10 percent battery, which means you have to use idle charging before you can use it.

a full week and a half after the tablet again

Connectivity

The biggest point of concern is the only microUSB port. As is often the case with small and thin Windows 8 tablets is only à © à © n port. The lack of a keyboard dock, with more connectivity than extra awkward. Unfortunately, you have to also charge the tablet via the USB port with the supplied adapter cable. And that’s rather inconvenient. Connecting to another device or memory stick and simultaneously charge is thus impossible. Incidentally, all competitors of the Lenovo Miix 2 8 this problem.

Bluetooth is useful for a Bluetooth keyboard, and works great.

the WiFi signal is perfect we just had to say that the download speed of inexplicable moments was on the low side.

GPS picks up the signal really fast and accurately.

the cover you’ll find a microSD slot, with a nice high write speed, and optional (not included in this review model) a SIM card slot.

Software

Windows 8 continues limping on two legs, if we may say it that way. One leg (Modern UI or touch environment) is suitable for 8-inch screen, but has just a bit too little apps (where are Gmail and YouTube?). The other leg (the traditional desktop) is not always suitable for the small screen, because of the small icons and small gestures that work in desktop mode.

The more striking is the Office 2013 license you get there, which only works in the desktop mode. This gift is found in all Windows tablets smaller than 10 inches. This desktop interface remains necessary would you be productive with this Miix 2 8.

Of the 64 GB of storage that Lenovo provides, we see that 45.4 GB is available. This results in a practical availability, by deducting the Windows OS (Office not included), a small 30 GB of free space available.

We also find some bloatware, such as a test version of an antivirus package on this tablet.

Positives and negatives

Thin housing

+ + Excellent performance
64 GB storage + sd
+ Excellent battery life
+ Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student included

– Yellow shine in dark areas with non-straight angle
– Low speaker volume on the back
– Only à © à © n microUSB port
– Windows 8 is still not the adult tablet

Conclusion

Windows (8) enthusiast will no longer be the Lenovo Miix 2 8 enthusiastically. The device succeeds in all major tests and then scored a large enough, a 7 (or 3.5 out of 5 stars). The neat display, excellent performance and good battery life than expected set a new standard for Windows 8 tablets and set the bar for the 8 inch high variants directly. The price of 349 euros (64GB – Wi-Fi) is certainly acceptable to call

.

It remains unfortunate, Windows 8 on an 8 inch tablet remains (at this time) uneasy combination. The modern touch interface is still not fully mature for the tablet PC. Essentia «le apps are missing and many Dutch apps are not yet converted to the Windows 8 Store. When will this change the score will be able to get a very nice 8.

from

Looking at the competition, we find that enough in the 8-inch segment. Small Windows 8 tablets are a handful (Encore Toshiba, Dell Venue Pro 8, W4 Acer Iconia, ASUS VivoTab Note 8) with almost identical specs. Lenovo excels by offering. A 64 GB model for 349 euros We see enough competition on other platforms. Especially Android tablets shown to have better specs and another to be cheaper. Also, for example, the ipad Sample 2 has a better display, but is not cheaper.
