Percentage tablets growing inside Android ecosystem - Tablet Guide

Google’s open source  Android OS gets a firmer foothold. Apple’s iOS has been overtaken as the most used mobile operating system some time ago and the difference seems to be steadily growing. Both phones as well as tablets contribute to this growth. Google published at the beginning of this year, the statistics of all the so-called form factors  within the Android ecosystem. The result? Screens are bigger and have a higher resolution. Market share also takes tablets within the Android ecosystem is steadily increasing.

Yet we can not speak of a large share of the tablet computer compared with smartphones and phablets (major smartphones). We come from an estimate of a 10 percent share of tablet within the Android ecosystem.

Android tablet vs. Android phone

graph below shows the distribution of the screen size in the current Android ecosystem. This is not the distribution of Android phones and tablets sold but which are actually used by users.

Market share tablets vs. phones in Android

Small = less than 3.5 inch
Normal = 3.5 to 4.7 inch
Large = 4.7 to 7 inches
Xlarge = 7 inches and larger

Unfortunately, Google does not give the exact screen formats, which is especially a problem with determining the boundary between phablets (to 6.9 inches with phone function) and small tablets (from 7 inches with no phone function). In a previous analysis, we proceeded from the assumption that all phones tablets would be given when no major smartphones existed in low resolution. Mdpi with a screen resolution and a large screen Large Android devices with high resolution were then almost always the high-end smart phones because 7 inch tablets with high resolution were at that time still an exception.

Now form factors  phones and tablets are approaching each other more and more, and even above definitions overlap, obtaining data more difficult. Therefore, we must make an estimate of the number of tablets in a category.

we take a lot of the large Android devices with mdpi pixel density and a smaller proportion of this group of devices with a high pixel density, we arrive at a rate of about 4.5 percent (of the Large appliances ) plus 5.4 percent (all Xlarge tablets) which equates to a market share of 10 percent tablets within the Android ecosystem.

Our previous analysis in July 2013 gave a share of around 7.5 percent. Although it is a slight increase concerns, we can assume that the number of Android tablets, compared to the number of Android smartphones is increasing worldwide.

Android fragmentation

fragmentation within the Android ecosystem seems to be the huge number of new Android versions are released.

to

Old Android versions appear to be difficult but phasing Google. Thus we see Gingerbread (Android 2.3) still have a market share of over 21 percent, which was half a year ago, 34 percent. Honeycomb (Android 3.x) seems to disappear quickly. But in Android 4 is shown. One big partition again Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) running on still nearly 17 percent of all Android tablets and phones. Within Jellybean (Android 4.1 to 4.3) also seems to be where most of the phones and tablets (bija 36 percent) still comes with Android 4.1. A large distribution The new KitKat (Android 4.4) only seems to grow steadily with a share of only 1.4 percent.
